Aaja Naach Le?

Naach

A more detailed review can be obtained anywhere else in the web. This one is a good portrayal, although I do not agree with it entirely. Taran is a commercial guy and hence views from his angle only.

Ram Gopal Varma (RGV, seems like a political party) has created a marvel in Rangeela, so this one seems like a pale reflection of that one in some parts... I'm not even going to compare Urmila and Anthara.. both are good! The former has better acting talent, although the latter is catching up nicely.

Anyways, I like Anthara's character. She is true to her art, not touched by any unnecessary emotion and definately not too practical. She is a dance scientist, actually she is so sure of her theories that even comparing her to a scientist would offend her. Hey.. Donald Trump.. maybe you gotta ditch Melania, here is Anthara and you've already built a Taj Mahal... ain't this easy?

Abhishek on the other hand is a practical fellow, who wants money, power, fame, etc. Hence these two albeit were struggling to get a break into the film industry, cannot get along, given their different styles and approach to life. This is very typical, but what I like about the movie is that it says what an Abhimaan would say in its total runtime, in one scene!

What's new?

This movie takes a different angle to the film industry and how different people get into it. There is always something different about RGV's movies, this one is different too, it is way too slow for his standards. In parts, it drags one almost to sleep.

Noticeable

It is tough to notice anything other than Anthara in the first half of the movie. I think this skin show was necessary for the dance sequences involved :-) Also, looks like Anthara is a pro in Yoga, she is way too flexible, almost like a Prabhu Devi. Aby Baby is improving as an actor with every movie. I am sure his filmstar blood is paying off rich dividends. The title song was really good, the music overall was above average.

Medium: DVD

Verdict

Slow art movie. Watch it for Anthara, the yogic dance and Abhishek. Not much to it besides that. I was kind of let down since I expect RGV to deliver much more!

Mana Madurey

Madurey

I have always been a big fan of the Illaya Talapathi, Vijay. He has a charisma about him that is wonderful. He is adept at both action sequences and dances. In this movie, although he has done his part, the story and cinematography has let him down. Who is that fat woman, Rakshita? Is she Rambha's sister?

Medium: Superb VHS with DVD print
What's new?
A new way to create abortions has been explored! Lock up the pregnant woman in an air-tight garage filled with smoke and let her cough out her baby... and if you are lucky, you could get her life too! I find it disgusting to see villains that would attack a pregnant woman to seek vengeance on her man!

Noticeable
Vijay is good in his masala role. The dialogue, "Idhu Kattalaiiiii" has been repeated too many times and does not have the same impact as it would if Talaivar had said it. The Villain has a powerful presence. Sonia Aggarwal has done well in her small role. She showed signs of her good potential in the scene where she breaks into KTR's home to recover evidence of his unlawful dealings. Besides that, Rakshita's Thunder Thighs, hips and what not... I really don't understand how that female has the audacity to show off her fluff! Vadivel has been kind of lackluster in this performance.

Verdict
I would probably have liked the movie much more, if I had followed Rathish's advice of fast forwarding the first half. The second half is really what the story is all about, unless you are interested in fat women in their bathrobes! The potential of Sonia Aggarwal has been under-used in this movie. Songs were not up to the usual mark of Vijay movies like Bhagavathi. Overall, timepass but below average.

AetBAAR baar nahi dekho!

Aetbaar

Bipasha was one of the obvious reasons why I took this movie. Besides, I remarked to my dad that Amitabh is a lucky chap and there will be something in his movies. If I enjoyed watching Aks, I would definately enjoy any stupid AB movie which has Bips starring in it! But frankly, this movie gave me much more.

What's new:

Not much except one or two situations and twists. I am gonna refrain specifying these as they could be potential spoilers. This is one movie where the feelings are brought out very naturally from a young passionate lover's perspective.

Noticeable:

Bipasha's acting is among the best in the industry when it comes to thrillers. The fact that she's so sexy just makes it better. She has given a very mature performance. So, has John Abraham. I am beginning to like this chap, he suits the stylish villain role better than most in Bollywood. The chemistry between the lead pair is terrific. I do not so much appreciate the loud sound of Amitabh's saliva between sentences. He's better reduce the volume of such sound effects!

Medium: VHS @ Home

Verdict: Good movie although its not a Must watch!. Suspense/Climax is not up to the usual Vikram Bhatt standards, but not a bad movie.

Maatu Yosi!

Tenkasipatnam

Saw this superb movie starring Vivek and Charlie. The other main characters were mere fillers. What a great comedy track! We had people of different age groups here and everyone had their bellies aching due to the high intensity laughing! Wonderful yet decent comedy throughout the movie. There are few sequences that really stood out... The Cow scene with Vivek and Charlie playing the head and tail of the cow respectively, were hilarious! One could not stop laughing watching the cow climb up the ladder, ride the bicycle, fend off a bull's arousing, etc. The simulation of the cow's belly, had our bellies really popping out! Awesome sequence. There were other nice comedy tracks throughout the movie, but this one stood out!

What's new?

I've never seen a movie where the main characters have been sidelined to this extent! Saratkumar, Napoleon, Devyani, Samyuktha, P.Vasu were all ok in their performances, but I don't think anyone noticed them.

Noticeable

Comedy all the way. Vivek plays his role to perfection whether it is emotional scenes or comedy scenes. Charlie provides good backup.. but he has very often been used in a "loosu" role. The action sequence where Sarath carries Napoleon on his shoulders while he fights is funny.. perhaps its a part of comedy track too!

Verdict

Realy worth watching again and again for comedy and to an extent the songs. The action sequences were too many but some were good.

Bollywood Ho......zzzzzzz

Bollywood Hollywood

This was another film that I had heard about quite a bit in a nice way and hence was excited to watch it. The initial reluctance caused by seeing Rahul Bose's name on the label was quickly overcome by the fact that I had heard from reasonably reliable sources about the movie. I have seen way too many movies of Rahul Bose in the recent past, including, Chameli, Jhankaar Beats, Mr & Mrs Iyer, etc.

But as soon as I watched the first bit of the movie, I saw that it was Rahul Khanna, not Rahul Bose (as someone said in one of the comments to my post: they better get their facts straight!). My sister was all ga-ga about Rahul in her younger days when he was a VJ on MTV. I did not find him as talented as his brother, Akshaye, who also makes a brief cameo in this movie.

The reason why the title of this blog post is terminated by the snores is because that's how my viewing of this movie also terminated. Don't get me wrong... the culprit was not entirely the movie. I was way too tired and hence fell asleep, however, some blame does go to the movie.

What's new?

As far as I saw it, it was a pretty slow moving film. The total English medium took me by surprise and left me as the only viewer of this film, since my parents resigned as soon as they knew it was not Hindi. It was an oft repeated theme of a traditional family that blackmails young men to get married as soon as they get "settled". Here there was a twist, a smart guy hires Lisa Ray, (who was really hot in some sequences), to act as his fiance' and then you know what happens. Filling in those blanks will not be appropriate in this section, since it will no longer be anything new!

Noticeable

This was a daring movie. Some sequences were clearly not suitable for viewing with the whole family, specially the scene where a woman makes a takla guy's head a pendulum between the extremities of her chest! If she were a Jessica Simpson or Britney Spears or our very own Mallika Sherawat or worst case even Mandira Bedi, I might have been more interested.. but this one was disgusting far beyond any of the names mentioned! Why can't Bollywood ever make the right choice!?!?!? The Akshaye song was good. Besides that, Rahul was kind of a disappointment to me.

Medium: VHS @ Home

Verdict: Certainly not a must watch... kind of let me down.. but provides a good entertainment factor if you are not as tired as I was when I began watching this. Can watch it only once I think.. not much repeat viewability.

Junior SEE-Near

Junior Senior

I had a faint memory of having seen a couple of scenes of this movie back in 2002, but never got to see this in its entirety. Mamooty was the main reason why we took this movie, specially after his sizzling performance in Kandukondain, I developed a new found respect for his dialog delivery, which had a great repeat repeatability... wait a minute.. is that correct? aah who cares... So, the expectations were high going into this one. The whistles for his first couple of dialogues died out quickly!

What's new?

Not too many movies showing a Stockholm Syndrome amongst roomies.. both are so close.. and think so much alike.. that they end up with the same girl! :-) IS THIS NEW???

Noticeable

Disgusting performance by the heroine of the movie.. seems to be some mallu chick, who could really boast of nothing at all...leave alone performance.. even the second actress was much better in that regard. The MALLUasiyan influence is clearly visible in this movie and its songs.

Medium

VHS @ Home

Moral

Never rely on one artist before taking it... Mammooty can never beat his Kandukondain performance!

Verdict: Not worth this blog space!!

paisa-Vasool

Vasool Raja MBBS

This is the second time I am watching this movie. The main reason for this repeat was definately Sneha. She is really cool in this movie! What a decent performer! For her talent, she will definately out-do people that she is often compared to, e.g. Meena. The comparison to Munnabhai is inevitable, but I think the tamil version has done its bit. It was very pleasant.

What's New?
Pretty much nothing! It is a known copy of Munnabhai MBBS.

Noticeable
Sneha Sneha Sneha Sneha Sneha & Kamal Hassan's comic timing. Contrary to reviews thrashing Prakash Raj's performance, I disagree. It is just that Boman Irani performed outstandingly in his role for Munnabhai. Prakash was pretty good, just not aged enough to play Sneha's dad, no matter how white they could make his hair.

Medium: VHS @ Home

Verdict

Good pleasant movie to watch with the whole family. The situations like the Carrom board thatha played by "Bokkey" were more apt for Hindi than tamil. Sanjay is unparallelled in his role as a kind hearted don, but Kamal has done full justice to his role. Sneha is a touch better than Gracy, or so I felt coz I definately like her better and hence the obvious bias. Crazy Mohan and Prabhu are not the least like their hindi counterparts! Rustom and Arshad are toooo good. Crazy's dialogues are lackluster. All in all a faithful remake. Worth watching many times!!!

VKR sizzles in RVK!!

Rettai Vaaal Kuruvi

Back to the 1980s for a brief while... heard all the songs of this movie, but I had no memory of seeing it during my childhood days.. so decided to watch it nonetheless when a DVD print of this movie caught my eye.

What's New?
What could be new in an old movie? Yes, there was... no movies today play around too much with a man marrying two women blatantly! Rajini's "Veera" did touch upon it a bit.. but that was more out of misconception and necessity.. this was really blatant!

Noticeable
Better than average performances from Mohan, Radhika and Archana. VK Ramaswamy was really good! The comedy overall was lively and the songs were outstanding! Those were the real "Illayaraaja" days! Mohan's makeup was not all that good... his face was unmasked :-) Radhika was stylish for those times... good performance from the much hated Chitthi!

Medium
DVD @ Home

Verdict
If you have not watched it and don't mind the concept of bigamy just for fun, this is a good movie to watch when vallarara kozhandaigal are not around!

Fid-naaaah

Fida

Recently one or two comments got me thinking.... maybe I should be more careful about my expressions out here... who knows there maybe a director or two reading this one.. they will not give my movie a chance when it does come out someday! :-)

Anyways, even after reading reviews and word of mouth requests to reject this movie, I went ahead and watched it at home.. hoping that there would be something in it....

What's new?
I could not think of anything. The usual love triangle, a twist in the tale, some betrayal, some partners in crime, seem to have heard this before? Just pick out a movie from the store at random, chances are, you'll see all these elements in varying proportions! I am not sure if an internet bank robbery has been portrayed in Hindi movies before... but there's got to be atleast something close.

Noticeable
Kariena Kapoor has been one of my most hated actresses.. irrespective of her shape or attire. Her konashttais are enough to keep me away! But in this movie, she was somewhat toned down. Maybe she's growing up too, but she'll never grow on me!

Medium
VHS @ Home

Verdict
Nothing special... if you HAVE to spend a dollar... donate it to the AIDS foundation or CRY or something.. if you absolutely HAVE to take a movie, please try something else... but if you are a Kariena fan.. you may have already seen it... Chinmaya, you seen this yet?

backwAAss

Aaalukkuro Aasai

There is nothing much to say about this... it was an open and close movie. I did not shut it down like Alibaba... this one ran its length..

What's new?
I have never seen such a stupid movie that takes back Indian Women's moment back a 50 years!

Noticeable
No more madippus in Meena's iduppu... its a uniform barrel with an increased radius...

Medium:
VHS @ Home

Verdict:
Please spare yourself a dollar and distress.

HyderaBAD blues

Saw this much touted movie from Nagesh Kukunoor. This was long overdue since I've heard so much about it.

What's new?
This is probably one of the first movies to focus on this subject, where a guy that goes to America to pursue higher education, returns to his homeland after a long time.

Noticeable:
Admirable performance from Kukunoor and the lead actress who played Ashwini. The others were natural.

Medium:
VHS at home.

Verdict:
The Humor element was gentle and really nice. The rest of the masala were not in the right proportion.. so in my mind, this movie overall is average.

Dhoom Maja Leyyy

DHOOM

Saw this Yash Raj movie for the second time in as many months, both times in the theater! This time mainly because it was free! The repeat viewability however, was remarkable!

Medium: Amar theater, Funasia, Richardson

What's new?
It has a great sense of style that you only see in Hollywood movies. It had more style than most stylish Hollywood movies actually and has set the bar really high for anyone trying to emulate style. They could have done without mentioning the word "style". The idea of a heist in the casino may have been repeated in several B/Hollywood movies, however, this one has a refreshing twist to it.

Noticeable:
1. Esha Deol's unlimited exposure! This was new... I've only seen her in the Aayudha Ezhuthu style and she sucked. Here she reveals her shape and a pinch of tan does her no harm. She has also danced nicely to the tunes. The jet ski scene is heights of exposure for even a Bipasha or Mallika. Rimi Sen adds her skin component
to make it a large skin show.. but that's not all in the movie...

2. Uday Chopra's acting talent and comic timing. This guy ought to have been more famous. But maybe because he acts selectively is why he looks cool. A filmfare for best comedian award on the cards?

3. Aby Baby has done a very good job in this movie as a follow up to his role in Yuva.

4. Last but certainly not the least... John Abraham was WONDERFUL!!! Super style, super bod and great acting. He deserves the best villain award for his performance!

Aladdin's Lamps blown off!!!

Alauddinum 40 tirudargalum

Saw (or should I say glanced) this tamil movie starring Prabu Deva & Kiran at home. We did not even get to 15 minutes before we turned it off!!!

What's new?
This is the first time I have gotten irritated to the point of switching off the VCR before even 1/4th the movie! I have watched so much crap before.. but am somehow not able to tolerate this any longer.

Medium: Does it matter?? VHS at home... horrible print, probably a reason for the turn off.

Noticeable:
The only thing I noticed was Kiran's bathing scene. She's too flabby to be turned on even 1%. However can any man avoid a look unless he's not straight?

Verdict:
Horrible! Telugu dubbing... if I were alone.. probably I'd catch a longer look for the oomph.. not possible in the presence of the entire family anyways! ;-)

Masti Masti Masti

Masti

Although I've already watched this movie and enjoyed it, went to watch it again, this time with the whole family in theater.

Medium: Antony theater, Funasia, Dallas.

What's new?

What can be new when you are watching the movie for the 2nd time? Guess what? There was! I did not notice some of the double meaning jokes very well.. but this time I caught it on big screen.

Noticeable:
Repeat Viewability was great! It was a wholesome family entertainer! Haath hi mera saathi was among the notables. Also... yeh bhi ghoda chalaney jaisa hi hai... ek baar chalao.. to jaathe hi reh jaatha hai! The repeat viewability was also unexpected!

Verdict:
Wonderful movie, great songs and good performances. The characters, especially for the wives were well thought of and if you are married, you can easily identify your wife with one of the three types portrayed. Maybe you will walk out with a solution to your problems ;-) I did not find any solutions though....

Rakht

Saw this movie starring some of my favorite stars: Bips, Sanjay Dutt & Suneil Shetty.

Medium: VHS @ Home

Noticeable: Perfect remake of English movie "Gift". Wonderful depiction and performance from Bips. The others were fairly standard in their character portrayal. Catchy locales and opening! The suspense was very nicely built up for a Bollywood movie.

What's new: Pretty much nothing!

Overall: Great Thriller! Good climax.
