apBose

Bose

Caught this flick on DVD (mainly for Sneha and producer: JH Murali). This was a thorough action movie. The action sequences were breathtaking. A refreshing change for a tamil movie along the lines of Kaakha Kaakha, but no where near.

Kalabhavan Mani has done a great job as usual. Srikanth has come across very well as an action hero. The army training camp scenes were realistic and well shot. Sneha has been wasted in this movie. She has shown her potential, but the story is made for Srikanth and he has benefitted from it for sure. Others like Talaivaasal Vijay, Nagesh, etc are all surplus in this movie.

All in all...if you love action sequences, watch Bose. Otherwise.. just listen to the songs on Raaga.

AYE-traaz

Aitraaz

Caught this movie on DVD last night. I've got only 2 words... WATCH IT!!!

Priyanka Chopra has really established herself in this Abbas Mustan flick. Albeit, this movie is not in the same league as some of the class efforts from this director duo, it keeps the viewers plugged in through the end (partially due to Priyanka of course!)

Why does Kariena always become the scapegoat in Bollywood movies where ravishing beauties play cameo roles. Then it was Ajnabee, now it is Aitraaz, there it was Bips, here it is Pri.

The court scenes were drawn out a little bit and were a bit unrealistic and crude, but other than that, it was a really cool flick.... it is Priyanka all the way!

She has done the romantic, modelling and vengeful scenes with passionate energy and great elegance, which should get her the filmfare for the best supporting artist (Rani will give her a tough fight thanks to the Yas Raj rigging factor.. no offense to Rani here). She not only clobbered Kariena, but even sidelined Akshay Kumar. She might be a serious contender to Bipasha if she keeps this tempo going.

Paresh Rawal's court performance reminded me of his role in Akele Hum Akele Tum, while Annu Kapoor has done a sufficient job. The comedy track has been understandably toned down and the music was mediocre but was compensated for by the superb locations, picturization, cinematography, and costumes.

The climax was good.. although it was no big riddle, it was pretty realistic. I shall say no more.

Verdict: As a Priyanka and Abbas-Mustan Fan, I loved this movie. It is quite different and stylish. This is worth watching!

Arjunar-WILLu

Arasaatchi

An Arjun starrer.. should there be anything else said about this? He is the star of the movie throughout. This is another suspense thriller which reminds you of his roles as Mudhalvan or Gentleman. This time round, he is a student of law, who does not believe in waiting for the courts to deliver justice. He does not believe in climbing the witness box since he understands that he will be targetted next. Anyways, he is now bent on screwing the bad lawyers who take up the cases for criminals in an effort to set them free. He warns them beforehand and if they ignore this warning, they shall be ignored from life beyond the obituary lists. The climax seems to have a flavor of Nayakan with the family element coming into play... Raghuvaran and Anand Raaj have played good cameo roles besides the major element, Arjun, who has played a stereotypical role.

Bottom Line: Arjun Masala... Vivek's Comedy is slightly below his average. Can watch once.

The Others in Hindi

Hum Kaun Hain
Not much to write about this.. it is a faithful remake of the English movie, "The Others", starring Nicole Kidman. Dimple has done a very good job in Nicole's role and so has Maushmi Chatterjee as the governess of the house and the two child artists. There is some stupidity that this movie could have done without.. and that is the concept of reincarnation and other complications caused by Vikram Gokhle's character. I wonder if Dharmendra sleep-walked into the sets of this movie to do his role. Amitabh was way below par in his role and seemed like a perfect zombie.
Verdict: Watch the English version, it is far more gripping and sensible!

HELL-Chul

HulChul
Saw this hyped Akshaye Khanna movie on DVD @ home. One word before watching this movie (or reading this review)... leave your brains behind!!!!
Not so good...
  1. The story was total bullshit! How many times have we seen two big families having some age old conflict that prevents future generations of these families from acquainting with each other?
  2. Looks like Bollywood can still not have enough of this crap! This movie takes it to the limit... Amrish Puri, the patriarch of one of the families, has a board outside his door that reminds you of Gandhi, the movie: "Women & Dogs not allowed" !!!!!
  3. Lakshmi's dialogues: "Gajraaj... Gulab Jul Jadhko!!" and some other irritating "kul maryaadha" dialogues.
  4. Ending Garland sequence was horrible!
  5. Made absolutely no sense for Amirsh Puri.. the brave and prestigious man to turn guard for his enemies' wedding!
  6. Jackie Shroff and Arbaaz Khan were literally eunuchs in the movie!
Great...
    1. Paresh Rawal's comedy.. this was one of the strongest points of this movie.
    2. The casting of Lakshmi was apt.. she's done a good job. The hindi voice dubbing though, was pretty irritating!
    3. Akshaye and Kareena did a good job of hating each other even as they were dancing together in the hindi equivalent of "Aasai Aasai..".
    4. Suniel Shetty comes only in multi-starrers these days, but manages to steer clear of the others once again. Good job for a guy that's there just to make money!
Verdict...
Not recommended. This is an age old story, repeated with a comic tinge. Does not make one laugh enough. Easy to pass.

What a MAN-mathan

Manmathan
Watched this movie online for free. The print was not the only thing that was good, the movie was really good except some parts that were dragging. Three thumbs (can I borrow one from you?) UP for Simboo. Wonderful and a Mature performance from the lad. I never really cared much for him before this movie except for his singing (April Madathil & others). In this movie, he really has lived to achieve his childhood ambition of taking complete charge of his own movie. Kudos to Simbu.. he is an achiever!!
Not so good....
Jyothika has been wasted in this movie. She has also grown fatter than she was in Kaakha Kaakha. The action sequences, songs and the picturization could have been better. Mandira Bedi was irritating to say the least!
Great...
Simbu & Simbu only! The story was okay.. well developed. The item numbers were okay.
Verdict
A good movie to watch once. Was pretty stylish. Although it reminds you of Ajith's Villain, it is different.

Azhagiye Thaniyey

Azhagiya Theeye

This was an awesome movie! I have always respected Prakash Raaj for his skills.. but this movie is really a showcase of his abundant talent. I really liked the simplicity of this movie. It began like it was another Puthu Vasantham, but I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. None of the stars were that well known, except Prakash himself. But they portrayed a wonderful picture that makes us all feel good.

What's new?

Almost everything. The faces are new, the story is different, the ending is different too! What seems to be a single sided love story almost throughout the second half, has a soft and natural turn about it in the climax. The performances were really soft and natural for a change. Also, Prakash has just moved on with the story very well instead of repeating the usual drama sequence of the rich girl's father wrecking his vengeance on the poor guy that elopes with his daughter. Instead the focus remains on these two youngsters moving on with their lives.

Noticeable:

We get to see some great comic timing from Prasanna and Prakash Raaj. The malayali new face actress has also done an amazing job. Kudos! I hope she becomes really successful. You feel as if you are looking at one of your class girls when you look at her (except in my class... the girls left much to be desired! ;-)) The costumes were also well chosen to maintain the soft tone of the movie. This is one movie where the support cast has really supported the main stream performances. They make you laugh and cry at the same time. The poetic portrayal of the girl in a white salwar amidst the Ooty mist was cool.. although when it came true in the end, it was a classic Kollywood cliche'. But believe me, the re-creation of the mist with the kosu marundhu was a wonderful idea!

The comedy track was excellent! The spoof of movies like Kaakha Kaakha, Boys, etc. was great! I probably enjoyed it even more because I just saw Kaakha Kaakha and the memories of Boys is still fresh.

Medium :DVD @ Home

Verdict:

Excellent movie to watch with your whole family. This is one of the first tamil movies I am voting as a MUST WATCH in this blog.
